Skiing: Our Family Sport.

I have grown up learning how to ski at the same time I was learning to walk. My mother, who was born in Sweden moved to steamboat Springs, Colorado for a year in hopes of learning English. My father, on the other hand, was attending the University of Colorado's Law School but frequented Steamboat Springs on weekends to ski. It is here they met, and their love for skiing grew as their love for each other Grew. Because of this, skiing became our family's sport. When I was growing up, we had a cabin a couple of hours away from my home. Practically every weekend in the winter, we drove up to our Snowshoe cabin to learn to ski. I was three when my parents took me skiing for the first time. Obviously, I don't remember the first time, but I have seen pictures and home videos of me wearing a one-piece snowsuit with world's smallest boots and skis. I was secured in and held by a rope harness, where my mom would put her skis in the shape of a pizza around me and hold the ropes so I would be standing straight. Out of my brothers and I, I was the kid who enjoyed skiing the least. My parents have told me stories of falling asleep on the snow instead of learning to ski and checking myself out of ski school to play in the daycare area. I remember checking myself out of ski school to play with the other kids, have nap time, and eat Hostess sno balls.
For the longest time, my parents told me I was born in the wrong family because every vacation we took was to the mountains instead of the beach. I would beg and beg to go to a beach, but never made progress. My love for skiing has evolved since these first moments of falling asleep while learning to ski, checking myself out of ski school, and wishing I was at the beach. Now, I look forward to ski trips, because it means getting to spend time with my family and the beauty of nature. My father's birthday falls on Presidents weekend every year. He loves nothing more than to be skiing with his family on his birthday, so we always make it a point to meet up somewhere in the Rocky's. This past President's weekend, we all met up in Snowbird, Utah- one of his favorites. During this three day weekend, we got a bluebird day, a stormy day, and a full-on powder day. On the day before we left, Snowbird got two feet of snow. My whole family woke up long before the mountains opened, so were could be the first ones to enjoy the fresh powder. The entire day we were skiing around the whole mountain as if it was a powder-filled amusement park. I am already looking forward to our next family ski meet up.

  1. This was a nice post! I think it's cool that even though you didn't like it at first, you like skiing now. I also think it's awesome that your family goes skiing every year for your dad's birthday. It sounds like a fun time!

  2. It was really sweet to hear about the story of your parents. It is so funny, my whole life I always have begged my parents to take me on a skiing vacation, instead of a beach one! I am envious you are so good at skiing as this is something you will do for the rest of your life.

  3. I, too, learned how to ski at the age of three! I'm so thankful my parents signed me up for ski school at a young age. Unfortunately, my dad has developed knee pain over the past few years from playing racquetball, so we don't really ski as often as we used to. But when we do, I really enjoy it! I've never been skiing in Utah, but I've heard it's beautiful. You must be so advanced by now. Do you ski double black diamond?

  4. Great post! Skiing is such a fun thing to do with family. Growing up I would go to Beaver Creek to Ski a few times a year. Wish I went as much as I used to!

  5. Skiing is so awesome! I really wish that I lived closer to a skiing area, as going to Lake Tahoe during breaks with my family was one of my favorite parts of my childhood.
