I have grown up with a Swedish mother and American father. Ever since I was born, my family has spent our summers in Sweden. We would leave right when school ended and stay until school started- about two months. It is here that we got to enjoy and spend time with my mom’s side of the family. When my two brothers and I were younger, we would explore various summer camps there and alternate with visiting family all over Sweden. This way I was able to learn the Swedish language and culture, not only from my mom but also kids my age. At one point in my life, kids at my summer camp did not even know I was from the United States.
Summer was always my favorite time of the year, as I yearned for it all year long. The crisp summer air, brisque ocean, family time, and freshly caught seafood. As I started getting older, my brothers and I spent less and less time in Sweden over the summer because of summer programs and jobs. The last four years in college, I have only been able to spend about two one to two weeks there because of summer internships. For this reason, my Swedish has become rusty, and I haven’t gotten to spend much time in the past four years with my Swedish family. This summer I decided that would not be the case, so I decided to look for a summer internship in Sweden.
After months of searching for internships, some dead ends, and numerous interviews, I just accepted my final summer job. I have been in contact with a jewellery design company and just today had the last conversation. The well-known jewellery chain is called Ur & Penn, and just launched a new watch brand called Cate & Nelson watches. The brand aims to establish itself as a global brand and eventually become the first-hand choice among design and fashion-oriented customers in mid-range price segment. I am incredibly excited about this opportunity because it allows me to further my design career and get back to my Swedish roots and family.

My dad is American and my mom is British, so it is always really nice to meet someone who has a mixed background like myself! I will miss you this summer when you are in Sweden but now have an excuse to visit!
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool! Both of my parents are from Poland and also as I kid I used to spend a lot of my time in Europe. I have gone through the struggle of also maintaining my Polish, but unfortunately I have forgotten quite a bit in the last few years as I have not been practicing. Congratulations on the internship and jealous that you get to be in Sweden the whole summer!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to visit Sweden, it sounds like a beautiful place. Spending time with family is so important, especially as we get older. Congrats on your internship! It's so cool you'll be able to spend time with your family overseas, while gaining work experience in design!
ReplyDeleteHi Elisa! Sweden has always been on my bucket list to visit! I can relate since I attended a french school up until high school and since I haven't been practicing my french has gotten a little rusty. I just started listening to podcast in french and it has honestly really helped my speaking.
ReplyDeleteSeems like an amazing opportunity. Congrats and best of luck. That's awesome that you were able to combine your desire to be in Sweden with your professional interests.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! I'm sure your background also helps when you apply for this job!
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool that you'll be able to go back to your roots while also advancing your professional career! Good luck and enjoy Sweden!
ReplyDeleteElisa, that's awesome. I'm glad you decided to spend your summer in Sweden and I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you're still in Sweden at the beginning of August, you should really consider coming down to Göteborg for the Way Out West music festival. It's set in a park in the city and has a great laid back vibe, so make sure to check it out!
